USA will claim that time had expired before Belov attempted the shot, and will not attend the medal ceremony. Thus, they will never receive their silver medals, not even thirty years later, when the IOC will try to persuade them to change their mind and the medals will remain in a vault in Switzerland. The scorer, who is not a relative of his co player Sergei Belov, will die from a very rare disease (heart sarcoma) on 3 October 1978
